About

Collaborative Creator

At the foundation of my approach, I conceptualize all individuals and their interactions with others (relationships) within the Systems framework. More simply, one cannot understand our struggles without exploring the familial, social, and cultural contexts. My work is based on Solution-Focused Therapy. This encourages exploring your strengths, resources, and past successes in an effort to help find solutions to your current difficulties. My collaborative approach fosters a sense of agency in creating a co-constructed dialogue to explore and create realistic attainable therapeutic goals. This approach further emphasizes that you best understand your unique circumstances. Therefore the role of the therapist is to support collaboration around necessary changes in perceptions, thoughts, and behaviors. Lastly, I bring to the environment a compassionate and gentle stance, providing you with a warm, comforting, and safe space allowing more opportunity for you to deeply explore your history, present struggles, and future goals. I utilize cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectic behavioral therapy, eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), motivational interviewing techniques, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based techniques, art, play, animal-assisted therapy, and others. The use of multiple techniques and interventions (sometimes referred to as 'eclectic') provides you with a uniquely tailored treatment resulting in more effective solutions and life-long positive change. Originally from New Jersey, Kathryn moved to Philadelphia to study Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience at Temple University. After graduation, she moved to Hartford where she took a position as a Clinical Research Assistant at Olin Neuropsychiatry Research Center at the Institute of Living. Here, Kathryn dedicated 6 years to Child and Adolescent Neuropsychiatric Research leading to four publications for her work. During this time Kathryn also embarked on completing a Master's Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Saint Joseph College in West Hartford. Before opening Collaborative Family Solutions in the Fall of 2016, she worked at The Village for Families and Children as a Clinician providing Intensive In-home Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services (IICAPS) in Hartford. This was followed by a position at Wheeler Clinic as a Child & Adolescent Outpatient Clinician in Bristol and Plainville. Kathryn recently completed two years at Newport Academy, a co-occurring residential treatment facility for adolescents, as a Family and Primary Therapist, as well as a Recovery Counselor. Kathryn is a member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and the Connecticut Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. During her free time, she enjoys cooking, art, outdoor activities, and spending quality time with her friends & family.
